c.1944, Mindelo, San Vincente, Cape Verde (an archipelago of islands 500 miles from Africa’s west coast). Evora originates from the main port city of San Vincente, Mindelo, a base for the islands’ intelligentsia and industrialists following the end of Portuguese rule in 1975. It is also home to a music named morna. Morna sounds akin to a sophisticated blend of Portuguese fado, jazz and Latin, with its name a derivation of the English word ‘mourn’. Cesaria Evora is ubiquitously recognized as the pre-eminent force in the music, while her uncle, Xavier Francisco de Cruz, was the architect of many of its songs. Recognition came late in life for the singer, who had sung since her teenage years for subsistence. She eventually found fame at the turn of the 90s, with her success triggered by rave reviews in Parisian magazines (she is now partially based in the French capital).
