Centro-Matic was formed in Denton, Texas, USA, in 1995, when drummer Will Johnson quit the band Funland and decided to become a frontman (handling vocal, guitar, and songwriting duties) for a new project. Indeed, in subsequent years it has been hard to tell at times if Centro-Matic is merely a solo vehicle for Johnson (as evidenced by the band’s one-man early singles, or smattering of live gigs over the years with a slimmed down line-up), or a fully-fledged band comprising, at times, Johnson, Mark Hedman (bass), Scott Danbom (cello/violin), and Matt Pence (drums). Regardless of who joins him on record and stage, Johnson is a prolific songwriter, having allegedly written over 300 original compositions since the band’s inception, resulting in countless EPs, singles, tracks offered to compilations, side bands (notably the more acoustic-based South San Gabriel), and even solo releases, in addition to albums.
