After playing with various local bands, Rob Dickinson (23 July 1965, Norwich, Norfolk, England; vocals) and Brian Futter (b. 7 December 1965, London, England; guitar) instigated Catherine Wheel in the spring of 1990 by acquiring an eight-track tape machine and embarking on bedroom recording sessions. Joined by the rhythm section of Neil Sims (b. 4 October 1965, Norwich, Norfolk, England; drums) and David Hawes (b. 10 November 1965, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England; bass) for live shows, the band had an immediate impact which took them by surprise. Armed with a guitar-propelled sound that was sufficiently fashionable to attract attention without sacrificing creative depth, they released a debut EP, She’s My Friend, on the Wilde Club label at the start of 1991. This hinted at a potential that warranted certain members of the band forsaking lucrative jobs in the local oil industry in order to concentrate on playing full-time.
