Carmen Latretta Lundy, 1 November 1954, Miami, Florida, USA. As a small child Lundy sang in gospel choirs, as did her mother. In her early teenage years she was singing pop and worked professionally in the duo, Salt And Pepper. She studied music formally at the University of Miami, playing piano and singing. After graduation, she moved to New York City where she sang in clubs and also attracted attention as an actress. Her stage performances included roles in Sophisticated Ladies and They Were All Gardenias, in which she played the role of Billie Holiday. Among musicians with whom she worked were Ray Barretto and John Hicks, the latter being for a while a member of her regular trio.
