Detroit, Michigan, USA. Singing from a very early age, Cook was in the Angelic Choir of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in her home town. She studied, singing, piano and bass and although her studies were focused on the classical form, her interest lay in jazz. Cook lived in Boston for a while before settling in New York. There, she has worked in a variety of musical forms with contrasting jazz artists such as Lionel Hampton and Craig Harris, and has sung in other genres, including providing voice for computer games. International touring brought her to the attention of a wide audience and in the early 90s she taught at the Jazzschule in Basle, Switzerland. Her wide vocal range, allied to a broad repertoire that ably encompasses standards, gospel-flavoured music, and contemporary jazz songs, makes Cook a highly accessible singer to audiences of all kinds.
