Carl Lee Allen, 25 April 1961, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Born into a large musical family, Allen began his drumming career early by banging on pots and pans at the age of three. Naturally, this activity led to drum lessons at eight with teacher Roy Sneider. Considered for playing the trumpet in the grade school band, like his older brother, a quick demonstration from Allen convinced the director that he was better suited to the drums. In high school, under the tutelage of band director Robert Siemele, who was also a drummer, Allen was educated in jazz. At 16, he played his first professional engagement with the saxophonist Sonny Stitt. In 1977, Allen began attending a series of summer jazz camps in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
