Based in Los Angeles, this Anglo-American supergroup was formed in 1972 around Rod Evans (19 January 1947, Slough, Berkshire, England; vocals, ex-Deep Purple), Bobby Caldwell (drums, ex-Johnny Winter) and two former members of Iron Butterfly, Larry Rhino Reinhardt (b. 7 July 1948, Florida, USA; guitar) and Lee Dorman (b. 19 September 1945, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; bass). Although Captain Beyond established the units hard rock style, this initial line-up proved incompatible and Caldwell was replaced by Marty Rodriguez for the Latin-influenced Sufficiently Breathless. The album also featured Guille Garcia (congas) and Reese Wynans (keyboards). The departure of Evans precipitated a lengthy period of inactivity following a short winter tour, which featured the returning Caldwell. In 1975 Reinhardt, Dorman and Caldwell were joined by new singer Willy Daffern (ex-Hunger). This line-up broke up following the release of Dawn Explosion....
