Biography

From the ashes of Red Red Meat has risen Califone. One of alt rock’s best kept secrets from the 90s, Red Red Meat built a name for themselves in their home town of Chicago, Illinois, USA with their bluesy and ragged style, led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Tim Rutili. Shortly after the release of their 1997 album, There’s A Star Above The Manger Tonight, Red Red Meat called it quits, as Rutili focused primarily on running his record label, Perishable Records. Eventually however, his desire to write music returned, resulting in Califone’s formation in 1998. Although originally a solo project, Rutili was joined on Califone’s self-titled EP by his former Red Red Meat colleagues, keyboard player Brian Deck and multi-instrumentalists Ben Massarella and Tim Hurley.
