Biography

9 September 1964, Fredriksberg, Denmark. Born into a musical family, her father a composer and her mother an opera singer, Norby was attracted to music from an early age. However, it was not classical music that appealed to her but the pop and rock sounds that surrounded all children of her generation. She attended the singing school at Sankt Annæ Gymnasium, and then studied theatre at a folk high school. In 1982, she co-founded Street Beat, performing as the group’s lead singer, and the following year joined the jazz-funk group, Frontline. This band was awarded the 1985 prize named for jazzman Ben Webster and also received many accolades from the Danish music press. This led to work for Norby with other groups, including singing with the Danish Radio Big Band. Her success, and the manner in which she stepped across musical boundaries, broadened her appeal to encompass rock and jazz audiences alike. That same year, she formed a rock band, One-Two, with...
