Biography
Richard Terfry, 1972, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada. Deriving his name from a corruption of (the car model) Buick 65, self-proclaimed nerd and hick from Mount Uniacke, Terfry layers poetic, personal and evocative lyrics over often claustrophobic and painstaking beats, of which Radiohead and Aphex Twin are reported to be fans. Despite having been a member of fêted hip-hop collectives 1200 Hobos (alongside Sixtoo and Mr Dibbs) and Sebutones (alongside Sixtoo) and having previously released music as Stinkin Rich, Terfry has seemed to distance himself from the genre. His major label recordings, from 2002s Square to 2005s Secret House Against The World, often seem to owe as much to folk and post-rock as to hip-hop. Buck 65 has nevertheless stated Kool Keith as an influence alongside more esoteric interests such as Vivienne Westwood and the soundtrack to Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas.
