17 February 1974, Lawton, Oklahoma, USA. One of the most successful new country acts of the 90s, four of White’s first eight singles topped the US country charts. A major factor in his breakthrough was the songwriting of Skip Ewing, who provided the hits ‘Rebecca Lynn’, ‘I’m Not Supposed To Love You Anymore’ and ‘Someone Else’s Star’ for White. Although both White’s first two albums sold well, more interesting was his third effort, The Right Place. This saw him attempt to develop his own vision, rather than rely on a team of writers to frame his points of reference and image. As he told Billboard magazine in 1997, ‘Obviously, I sang every song on the album, but I also got to do a lot of percussive and background vocal stuff that I’ve never had time to do.
