5 June 1968, Columbia, Missouri, USA. Raised in Oklahoma and Texas, James played guitar and wrote songs from an early age. After school, he studied medicine for two years but spent any spare time he had writing songs. Dropping out of medical school he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in music. He wrote extensively and also made two albums but failed to make a breakthrough. Married and with a young family, he returned to Oklahoma and his studies in medicine but within days of his departure one of his songs, Love Is A Sweet Thing, was recorded by Faith Hill. It was now that the songs he had written clicked and in less than a year almost 30 of his compositions were recorded by various artists back in Nashville. Dropping out of medical school again, James returned to Nashville in 2000 and a hugely successful career as a songwriter.
