Regarded by many as the most exciting country rock-inspired band in Nashville since Jason And The Scorchers, BR5-49 arrived in 1996 with a provocative manifesto. As Chuck Mead (22 December 1960, Nevada, Missouri, USA; guitar/vocals) told the press: I dont want it to be seen as some kind of planned competition to stamp out new country. But thatd be nice, because it sucks. Mead had formerly played as a child in the Family Tree, a gospel hillbilly band made up of relatives, then Kansas roots rock group the Homestead Grays (one EP, Big Hits, and a CD, El Supremo, in 1991).
