Biography
Kayes, Mali. Traoré first rose to local prominence in the 60s, performing on Radio Mali, where his songs Mali Twist (an adaptation of the then fashionable Western dance style) and Kayeba (a call to all Malian exiles to return to their newly independent homeland) became hugely popular. To supplement the meagre wages he earned as a radio performer, Traoré worked as a tailor, a salesman and an agricultural agent for the government. In the late 60s he gave up music in order to concentrate on his governmental role. When his elder brother (also a well-known musician) died, it was assumed that it was Boubacar Traoré who had passed away. However, in 1987 he re-emerged to make a television appearance and a recording session for Radio Mali that resulted in the release of a locally popular cassette.
