19 January 1956, Youngstown, Ohio, USA. This rotund soul singer started performing in his local group, Mystic Nights, in 1971. He moved to nearby Philadelphia to find fame and in the mid-70s formed and fronted the quintet Sweet Thunder. They had a Top 40 R&B hit in 1978 with ‘Baby, I Need Your Love Today’ which they recorded for WMOT Records and which was picked up by Fantasy Records. The group recorded three albums for WMOT: Above The Clouds (1976), Sweet Thunder (1978), which made the US Top 200, and Horizons (1979). The group split in 1979 and for a time Newberry worked with the group Impact. In 1983 he signed with Boardwalk Records and his recording of ‘Love Town’, though only a minor US R&B hit, shot into the UK Top 20 in its first week of release, peaking at number 6.
