Biography

Deriving their name from a character in a popular war game story, Bolt Thrower are an extreme ‘grindcore’ rock band based in Birmingham, England. Originally comprising Alan West (vocals), Gavin Ward (guitar), Barry Thompson (guitar), Jo Bench (bass) and Andy Whale (drums), they released two attention-grabbing demos, ‘In Battle There Is No Law’ and ‘Concession Of Pain’. They finally managed to gain a recording contract on the strength of their session for BBC disc jockey John Peel, broadcast on Radio 1 in January 1988. The same year, their debut album emerged, featuring an aggressive fusion of hardcore and thrash with indecipherable vocals, this time from replacement vocalist Karl Willetts. Titled after their first demo, the contents were housed on the Vinyl Solution label, after which the band moved permanently to Earache Records. Realm Of Chaos was the first result of this union, arriving in striking cover art from the Games Workshop...
