Biography
Playing an intriguing blend of indie pop, psychedelic folk and alt country, this Portland, Oregon-based band was formed in 2000 by Eric Earley (guitar, vocals), Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboards), Brian Adrian Koch (drums, vocals), Michael VanPelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboards), and Marty Marquis (guitar, keyboards, vocals). The six friends had been playing together since the mid-90s, originally under the Garmonbozia moniker. Their self-titled debut as Blitzen Trapper was released in 2003 via the bands Lidkercow Ltd. label. Mixing fractured pop, fuzzy psychedelia and straightforward country and folk ballads, the album at times sacrificed cohesion for the sake of experimentalism but was nevertheless an impressive debut.
