William Charlie Hamper, 13 December 1958, Chatham, Kent, England. This cult songwriter, guitarist, producer, poet and painter’s career is a testament to his passionate commitment to the DIY spirit of the post-punk scene. Since the late 70s, Childish has recorded a prodigious number of independently released albums, published over 50 collections of his poetry, and produced over 1, 000 paintings. Remarkably, he has achieved this despite suffering from serious dyslexia.

A gifted teenage artist, Childish left school at 16 to work as an apprentice stonemason at the Naval Dockyard in his native Chatham. He managed to escape this employment by gaining a place at St. Martin’s School of Art, but was later expelled for failing to adhere to the institution’s strict guidelines.
