Biography

William Barron Jnr., 27 March 1927, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, d. 21 September 1989, Middletown, Connecticut, USA. The older brother of Kenny Barron, he established his reputation in his home town as a distinctive saxophone stylist. Strongly influenced by Dexter Gordon, he first came to national prominence in the late 50s playing tenor saxophone and recording with Cecil Taylor. In 1962 he formed and co-led a quartet with Ted Curson, also a former Taylor sideman. To gain recognition, the group played mostly in Europe but from 1968 Barron was active in New York as director of the Muse Jazz Workshop, part of an educational programme. A distinguished teacher, he was also associated with City College of New York and in 1984 took the chair of the music department at Wesleyan University. He was also a composer of merit.
