Biography
Edgar A. Benson, a cellist, was a contractor who ran a number of bands in the Chicago area in the 20s. Among the musicians he hired were many who wanted to play jazz but needed the regular money dance band work provided in order to live. Through the various Benson Orchestras passed men such as drummer Gene Krupa, pianist-arranger Roy Bargy, pianist Don Bestor, clarinettist Volly De Faut and saxophonist Frank Trumbauer. Both Bargy and Bestor later followed Bensons example and formed their own bands. In his hey-day, Benson was one of the few rivals to the immensely popular Paul Whiteman.
