Biography
c. 1966, New York City, New York, USA. His father, Frank Perowsky, has played tenor saxophone and clarinet with New York pit bands and also sat in or deputized with several noted big bands. He encouraged his son to take up music and Ben was playing drums with his father from the age of five. He heard jazz but was first attuned to the rock and pop music of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin as well as contemporary pop. As he began to listen to jazz of Miles Davis and Art Blakey vintage, his father and a family friend, drummer Bobby Thomas, helped direct his attention towards the master drummers of hard bop. Perowsky continued to study with Thomas and later at Berklee College Of Music he studied with Alan Dawson.
