Plans for guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck (24 June 1944, Wallington, Surrey, England) to form a power trio with the ex-Vanilla Fudge rhythm section were first mooted in 1969. Both the drummer, Carmine Appice (b. 15 December 1946, Staten Island, New York, USA), and bass player Tim Bogert (b. 27 August 1944, Ridgefield, New Jersey, USA), were dissatisfied with their band at the time. However, these hopes were dashed when Beck was involved in a serious car crash that put him out of action. Meanwhile, Bogert and Appice formed the heavy rock band Cactus, until in 1972, their paths again crossed with Beck and they assembled the heavy rock unit Beck, Bogert And Appice. The self-titled, commercially successful debut was instrumentally superb, but suffered from a lack of songwriting ability and strained vocals. Over thirty years later, the album sounds ponderous and is justifiably disowned by the band members.
