One of several US punk bands that emerged in the late 00s to find more favour across the Atlantic in the UK, the Nashville, Tennessee-based Be Your Own Pet! was formed in 2003 by Jamin Orrall (drums), Jake Orrall (bass), Jemina Pearl Abegg (vocals) and Jonas Stein (guitar). The quartet’s debut single, ‘Damn Damn Leash’, was released at the end of 2004 on the Orrall brothers’ Infinity Cat label. The spiky punk rush of the single attracted the attention of both Thurston Moore’s Ecastatic Peace! label and the UK independent XL Recordings, although during 2005 the band continued to release singles on Infinity Cat. Nathan Vasquez replaced Jake Orrall prior to the recording of the quartet’s self-titled debut album, a thrashy, horror movie-inspired punk rock collection that received good notices upon its release in March 2006.
