This Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA-based quintet has followed a similar musical path to the UK’s Flying Saucer Attack and Spiritualized since their inception in 1992. Their cerebral drone rock style, which is rooted in sources as diverse as 60s psychedelia, no wave, blues rock and free jazz, remains true to their ideals and resolutely unfashionable. The band was formed by brothers Michael and John Gibbons and Clint Takeda, who met twice a week for jam sessions despite not being able to play their instruments. The cacophonous sound they created was sculpted into a more coherent shape as the trio learned how to play their respective instruments. They began playing live shows under the name Bardo Pond, inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead, with Isobel Sollenberger added to the line-up.
