James Ramey, 1944, Richmond, Indiana, USA, d. 28 October 1970, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Baby Huey was the adopted stage name for this one-of-a-kind R&B vocalist. If his passionate, fiercely powerful vocals were not enough to distinguish him from the crowd, his gargantuan frame (Ramey suffered from a glandular disorder, and weighed in at around 350 pounds) and flamboyant fashion sense made him unmistakable. With help from his hard-driving backing band the Babysitters, Baby Huey merged high-octane R&B with a shimmering, funky brand of psychedelic soul, a sound that provided the perfect context for his raw, versatile voice and impassioned delivery (his singing style was often compared to Otis Redding). The Babysitters formidable playing and the singers eye-catching looks and dramatic performances made the act a popular concert draw in Chicago clubs in the 60s.
