Biography
Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, R&B vocal outfit Az Yet was formed by Dion Allen (2 October 1970), Shawn Rivera (b. 4 November 1971) and Kenny Terry. Allen recruited Terry after hearing him sing while cleaning a room at the Wyndham Hotel in Philadelphia. They then set about trying to convince LaFace Records’ president Babyface to sign them - Allen confessing to spending over $800 on phone bills during this period leaving snippets of the group’s demo tape on the company’s voice mail. In a final attempt to contact Babyface, they managed to pass a tape to his mother-in-law, Jacqueline McQuam. McQuam was so impressed by the group’s synchronized harmonies and elegant, understated songwriting that she immediately offered to manage the group, who had now swelled to a quintet with the addition of Darryl Anthony (b. 6 September 1969) and Marc Nelson (b.
