Formerly known as R.A.V.A.G.E., this US death metal band changed its name to Atheist in 1987 when the line-up of Rand Burkey (guitar), Roger Patterson (1968, USA, d. 12 February 1991, USA; bass), Kelly Shaefer (vocals/guitar) and Steve Flynn (drums) was established. From amateurish origins, the band developed into a powerful and accomplished death metal outfit. Playing at breakneck speed, their sound was characterized by Shaefers gurgling vocal style. They released a debut album in 1989 to favourable reviews, and built up a loyal following in their native state of Florida.
Bass player Patterson was killed in a car crash in February 1991. His replacement Tony Choy (ex-Cynic, Pestilence) added a new level of technical complexity to the superb Unquestionable Presence, which is now regarded as one of the defining albums of the death metal genre.
