Biography
1961, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, d. 23 November 1996, Sai Yok, Kanchanburi, Thailand. Jazz saxophonist Art Porter grew up in a musical family. His father, Art Porter Snr., played in his own band and that of John Stubblefield, and also accompanied singer Carmen McRae in a long career as a professional pianist. At the age of 15 Porter Jnr. joined his fathers band in Little Rock, but he was arrested and charged for working under-age in a nightclub. However, state attorney general and fellow saxophonist Bill Clinton intervened on his behalf. Clinton launched a new state law that allowed under-age musicians to perform in adult venues as long as they were accompanied by a legal guardian. That act became widely known as the Art Porter Bill.
