The first black metal supergroup, Norway’s Arcturus has seen a veritable who’s who of corpse-painted performers pass through its ranks, which together with its perennially mysterious status makes it difficult to know if the band is active or not. The band was formed in 1989 by Ulver / Borknagar vocalist Garm (Krisoffer Rygg), Mayhem drummer Hellhammer (b. Jan Axel Von Blomberg) and sometime Emperor guitarist Sverd (b. Steinar Johnsen), and recorded an EP, My Angel, which was released on the Putrefaction label in 1991 and is now almost impossible to find. A two-year hiatus followed, halted when black metal everyman Samoth (Emperor, Gorgoroth, Burzum, Zyklon) joined the band. Ulver bass player Skoll (b. Hugh Steven James Mingray) lent a hand to recording sessions and another EP, Constellation, was released by Samoth on his Nocturnal Art Productions label in 1994.
