Biography
4 September 1918, Union Hall, Virginia, USA, d. 18 June 1998. From a musical family, Edwards desire to be a guitar player developed out of the Saturday-night gatherings his father held at their home during his childhood. As a teenager he learned to sing and play by mimicking the 78s of Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt and hillbilly artist Frank Hutchison. For most of his life he continued with his day jobs, only performing at weekends or evenings at clubs in Washington, DC. In more recent years, Edwards had become a great favourite on the festival circuit, having visited Europe in the 80s and recorded for the German L&R label. Together with John Jackson and John Cephas, Archie Edwards represented the continuation of the east coast blues tradition begun in the 30s by Blind Boy Fuller. He performed regularly at festivals until his death from cancer in 1998.
