Biography
Formerly known as Lips, Anvil were a Canadian group from Toronto who made an impression on the speed-metal rock scene during the early 80s. The group comprised frontman Lips (vocals/guitar), who had lent his name to the groups previous incarnation, Dave Allison (guitar), Ian Dickson (bass) and Robb Reiner (drums). The band was technically excellent, playing at breakneck speed and with an intensity that few of their peers could equal. Their first three albums were exemplary, with Metal On Metal containing the strongest material. Following a series of legal disputes with their label, as well as internal conflicts concerning musical differences, there was a four-year gap between successive studio albums. Backwaxed was a compilation, released against the bands wishes, that featured songs they had recorded but rejected.
