Biography

1 July 1906, Vienna, Austria, d. 9 January 1985, Vienna, Austria. The man who arguably did more to popularize the zither than anyone before or after him, is best remembered as the sound behind the famous ‘The Third Man Theme’ (Harry Lime). Carol Reed’s classic 1949 movie, The Third Man, utilized Karas’ music throughout, and it was no surprise that filmgoers made the song and its accompanying album a number 1 hit in 1951. Although Karas was a virtuoso, he remains one of the more famous one-hit-wonders of our time.
