13 May 1976, Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Her father played guitar and Popovic began singing the blues as a child, before graduating to the guitar. Heavily influenced by American blues and blues rock artists, she developed an intense and evidently sincere feeling for the music. After forming her own band, Hush, in the mid-90s, she gained a local following. Her audience expanded as Popovic toured Hush throughout Europe and also made her recording debut. Towards the end of the decade she settled in the Netherlands where she studied music and also formed the Ann Popovic Band. She was subsequently signed to Ruf Records, a leading German label. In 2000 Popovic made her first visit to the USA, playing dates in Pittsburgh and along the eastern seaboard. She also began work on her first Ruf album, confusingly named for her first band, which was partly recorded in Memphis, Tennessee. Also in Memphis, she played at the 2001 May Festival.
