Biography
This US country rock band was formed in 1972 by Russell Smith (Howard Russell Smith, 17 June 1949, Lafayette, Tennessee, USA; guitar/vocals) and former Jesse Winchester backing musicians Jeff "Stick" Davis (b. Tennessee, USA; bass) and Butch McDade (b. David H. McDade, 24 February 1946, Clarksdale, Missouri, USA, d. 29 November 1998, Maryville, Tennessee, USA; drums). Barry "Byrd" Burton (b. Tennessee, USA, d. 10 March 2008, Hendersonville, Tennessee, USA; guitar, mandolin, dobro), James Hooker (b. 20 July 1948, Winnsboro, South Carolina, USA; keyboards/vocals) and Billy Earhart III (b. Tennessee, USA; keyboards) were brought in over the next three years to complete the original line-up. Mixing country rock with elements of R&B and gospel, they recorded their debut album Stacked Deck, in Memphis in 1975.
