Biography

England. This UK singer came to prominence in the early years of the twenty-first century as an in-demand session vocalist for the Brighton-based Tru Thoughts label. Contrary to the initial impression gained hearing her powerful vocals, Russell is a white English woman who grew up singing in classical choirs. Crucially, the influence of her musician father meant she also developed a love of jazz and soul to go with the formal training. Russell attended college in the seaside town of Brighton where she cultivated a strong local reputation, appearing on record and on stage with musically diverse acts such as Bah Samba and Kushti. After signing to Tru Thoughts she worked extensively with Will Holland’s funk-based Quantic /Quantic Soul Orchestra, in addition to putting together her own nine-piece touring band.
