England. This UK singer came to prominence in the early years of the twenty-first century as an in-demand session vocalist for the Brighton-based Tru Thoughts label. Contrary to the initial impression gained hearing her powerful vocals, Russell is a white English woman who grew up singing in classical choirs. Crucially, the influence of her musician father meant she also developed a love of jazz and soul to go with the formal training. Russell attended college in the seaside town of Brighton where she cultivated a strong local reputation, appearing on record and on stage with musically diverse acts such as Bah Samba and Kushti.
