Biography
25 March 1902, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, d. 15 August 1976, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. One of the great classical New Orleans clarinettists, Burbank rarely worked outside his home town. In his youth he worked with the bands of Buddy Petit, Chris Kelly and Punch Miller, but his best period was the decade following his discharge from the armed forces in 1945. Working and recording with Paul Barbarin, Wooden Joe Nicholas, Herb Morand, Kid Howard, Kid Ory and others, he gave consistent demonstrations of his powerful, sobbing vibrato. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Burbanks playing was the rich sonority of his lower register. From the mid-50s onwards, Burbank worked continuously in New Orleans, mostly with lesser musicians. However, he did record with Kid Thomas in the 60s, and in the 70s worked with Percy Humphrey and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
