Formed in Stow, Ohio, USA in 1998, the earliest incarnation of Abdullah consisted solely of vocalist and former Sloth drummer Jeff Shirilla. Various members were to come and go (including Shirilla’s step-brother) before he was united with guitarist Alan Seibert through an advertisement in a local music store. Three unreleased demos followed before the Snake Lore recording secured the duo a recording contract with burgeoning stoner label Meteor City. Although the band’s earliest demos had more in common with the tortured blues of Eyehategod, a more cultured stoner/doom sound was prevalent on the resulting eponymous album. An impressive debut, the band had distilled myriad influences into a potent combination, however it was Shirilla’s accomplished vocals and Seibert’s meaty guitar work that added substance and a real sense of momentum.
