Biography
Aaron Corthen Reed, 9 May 1926, Wordell, Missouri, USA, d. 26 February 2004, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Reed was attracted to the saxophone by hearing a Jay ‘Hootie’ McShann record. On moving to Chicago at the age of 15, he bought a saxophone and studied music, although he was tutored in the blues by J.T. Brown. Reed spent much of the 50s touring the south-western states with blues musician Dennis Binder. The following decade he re-established himself in Chicago, recording in his own right for several small labels including Age, USA and T.D.S., even enjoying a minor hit with ‘Talkin’ ’Bout My Friends’ on Nike Records in 1966. Reed became an in-demand session musician (he was house saxophonist for the Age and Chief labels) and also had long spells in the bands of Buddy Guy and Albert Collins, before going on to revive his solo career in the late 80s.
