This multifaceted South Bronx, New York hardcore quartet formed in 1986, initially playing a mixture of ska, punk and funk. They gradually began to incorporate hardcore aggression in the manner of Fishbone and Bad Brains, progressing, like the former in particular, towards an eclectic but accessible sound. Comprising founder Jimi Hazel (guitar), Peter Fluid (vocals), Rick Skatore (bass) and Anthony Johnson (drums), the band made its debut with Harder Than You, mixing rap and reggae into their funk and thrash melting pot, with stunning performances from the Jimi Hendrix -worshipping Hazel and the energetic Fluid. Gumbo Millennium continued in similar genre-blending fashion as the band began to attract press attention for their wild live act, but musical differences saw both Fluid and Johnson depart when touring ended.
