Biography

Wesley Curley Clark, 16 November 1939, Austin, Texas, USA. Known as ‘the Godfather of Austin Blues’, Clark grew up in a musical family. His father played guitar while successive generations of female family members sang gospel at St. John’s College Baptist Church. He made his professional debut playing guitar at the Victory Grill at the age of 16. Here he met T.D. Bell and joined his band, the Cadillacs, as bass player. He went on to play with Blues Boy Hubbard And The Jets, and then toured the chitlin’ circuit with R&B impresario Joe Tex, where he absorbed musical technique and crowd-thrilling stagecraft. Through the early 70s, Clark played with Southern Feeling with vocalist Angela Strehli and Denny Freedman (piano, guitar). An occasional guitarist with the band was Stevie Ray Vaughan. Eventually, Clark was coaxed into joining Vaughan’s new outfit Triple Threat Revue as bass player. He co-wrote the hit single ‘Cold Shot’...
