Biography
Earl Lavon Freeman Snr., 3 October 1922, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Freeman played C melody saxophone as a child, later switching to tenor. In the early 40s he played with several bands including, most notably, that of Horace Henderson. Late in the decade he was briefly with Sun Ra, and then settled into a residency at a Chicago hotel in a band which included his brothers Buzz on drums and George on guitar. Other members of the band included at different times Ahmad Jamal and Muhal Richard Abrams. The band accompanied many visiting jazzmen, notably Charlie Parker and Lester Young. In the 60s Freeman toured with a variety of artists, including several blues singers. From the 70s onwards he was again leading a jazz group, sometimes in harness with his son, Chico Freeman, with whom he recorded the album Freeman & Freeman.
