Biography

Vinícius da Cruz de Mello Morães, 19 October 1913, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, d. 9 July 1980, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the central figures in the creation of bossa nova, Vinícius de Morães contributed significantly to the music’s poetic fervour and cosmopolitan outlook. While he rarely composed on his own, his collaborations, most famously with Antonio Carlos Jobim, resulted in some of the most enduring songs in Brazilian popular music. He achieved renown not only as one of Brazil’s pre-eminent lyricists, but also as a cultural figure dedicated to the bohemian life.

De Morães’ multi-faceted career began while he was a law student in the 30s, when he published several works of poetry and criticism. An abiding passion for film led to work as a film critic as well as a censor (which later caused some to question his integrity).
