Biography
Taking their central influence from mid-70s Status Quo and adding heavier guitar, Fireball XL5 fan Steve Zodiac formed Quo Vardis in his home-town of Wakefield, England, in 1978, with bass player Alan Selway and drummer Gary Pearson. Zodiac, usually barefoot and bare-chested, with long blonde hair, guitar and screaming vocals, cut the perfect heavy metal stereotype. In 1979, dropping Quo from their name, the group released the 100 M.P.H. EP, and then set out on tour. By 1980 they had built a major live reputation, yet their second single, If I Were King, lacked that live aggression. Logo Records remained impressed and signed them up. Realizing that performance was their strongest medium, their debut album arose from a live taping.
