Biography
26 December 1915, Xenia, Ohio, USA, d. 7 November 1956, New York City, New York, USA. Playing piano and singing professionally while still in her teens, Carlisle was heard by Fats Waller in 1932. Hired by Waller, with whom she established a close relationship, Carlisle made several records in the late 30s. Waller joined her on some of these, notably a delightful version of I Cant Give You Anything But Love, but she also established a name for herself in her own right. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II she became highly successful in England, Germany and France, where she worked at the Boeuf sur le Toit in Paris. She then returned to New York where she undertook several successful engagements and recording sessions. In 1941 she recorded with John Kirby and was nominal leader of several small bands, which featured such leading jazzmen as Russell Procope, Charlie Shavers, Ray Nance, Lester Young and Benny Carter.
