6 December 1936, Southern Pines, North Carolina, USA. As a child Washington sang in church and for some years was a member of gospel choirs. In the 50s, she moved across to secular music, singing backup and supporting blues artists including Sam And Dave and Jackie Wilson . During the following decade she continued singing, often now as a solo act. Mostly this was in the south although she did make some appearances overseas entertaining at US Army bases. She had a moderate success with ‘Dear Diary’, but during the 70s and 80s her profile was low. In the early 90s, now living in Boston, Massachusetts, she became popular on the local blues club scene.

Although Washington’s blues and gospel affiliations are always evident, she incorporates into her repertoire R&B numbers, which she delivers with verve. Her singing style, regardless of the genre of the songs, benefits greatly from relaxed voice production and a lightly...
