Biography
The original Pioneers, formed in 1962, comprised the brothers Derrick Crooks and Sidney Crooks (24 February 1945, Westmorland, Jamaica, West Indies), and Glen Adams. The latter later enjoyed a career as a vocalist and studio musician, playing organ as a member of Lee Perrys Upsetters. The Pioneers debut, Sometime, was recorded for Leslie Kongs Beverleys label during 1965. By late 1967 they were recording for the Caltone label, owned by Ken Lack, former road manager of the Skatalites. In 1968, Sidney teamed up with Jackie Robinson (b. 21 July 1951, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies) to record a series of local hits for producer Joe Gibbs, hitting number 1 in the Jamaican chart with their first attempt, Gimme Little Loving.
