Biography
This uncompromising US garage band originated in 1962. Disenchanted US servicemen Gary Burger (guitar/vocals), Dave Day (David Havlicek, USA, d. 10 January 2008, Renton, Washington, USA; guitar/vocals) and Larry Clark (b. Larry Spangler; organ/vocals) formed the Torquays in Gelnhausen, near Frankfurt, Germany with a local civilian recalled solely as Hans (drums). Eddie Shaw (b. Thomas Edward Shaw, USA; bass/vocals) joined the line-up soon afterwards, while a fifth inductee, Roger Johnston (b. 26 December 1939, Texas, USA, d. 8 November 2004, Bemidji, Minnesota, USA), became their permanent drummer in 1964. A highly popular live attraction, the Torquays completed a single, Boys Are Boys/There She Walks for the tiny SCH label the following year before mutating into the Monks.
