Biography

Formed in Richfield, Minnesota, USA, in 1962 with the express purpose of playing at a fraternity party, the Castaways made one appearance on the US charts in 1965 with ‘Liar, Liar’, a ‘garage-rock’ gem marked by overbearing organ and heavily echoed vocals. Roy Hensley (guitar), Denny Craswell (drums) and Dick Roby (bass) originated the band, with Bob Folschow (guitar) and Jim Donna (keyboards) completing the line-up. Their only hit was also their first single, recorded for the local Soma label which was intended to gain the band a better footing from which to sell itself to local club owners. They recorded several other singles but none charted. Denny Craswell left the band to join Crow in 1970, while the remaining four members continued to perform together in subsequent decades. Meanwhile, ‘Liar, Liar’ remains popular, having received a boost in 1987 via placement in the movie Good Morning Vietnam.
