Biography
The ironically named Beauty Shop was formed in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA by singer-songwriter John Hoeffleur and drummer Casey Smith. The duo made their debut in the late 90s with the self-released Grief EP, which was initially issued in a very limited run and sold at concerts. The black humour of Hoeffleurs songs was reminiscent at times of the work of dour Texan singer-songwriter Johnny Dowd. Despite the unforgiving nature of their music, the Beauty Shop began to attract a cult following on the local circuit. They hired bass player Ariane Peralta shortly after being offered the chance to record an album via the Parasol label. Several tracks from the Grief EP appeared on the Beauty Shops album debut, Yr Money Or Yr Life, which was released in North America in 2001.
