Led by singer-songwriter John Davis, Superdrag were formed in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, in summer 1993. However, the seeds of the band had already been sown two years earlier, when Brendan Fisher (guitar) began dating Davis’ cousin. Fisher brought along his friend, bass player Tom Pappas, to jam sessions, and the trio initially formed a punk band with both Pappas and Davis on vocals. However, it soon became obvious that the central creative force within the band was Davis, and he took over songwriting and singing, with Don Coffey Jnr. taking over the drums and Pappas concentrating on bass. The new line-up made its debut at Knoxville club the Mercury Theater, before they established a residency in their own run-down apartment building - sessions regularly attended by a bizarre range of New York dropouts and ne’er-do-wells.
